So What Y'all Really Saying Is . . .

The Grammy’s never disappoint in one area and that is controversy; from the nomination of Iggy Azalea for Best Rap Album to Beyonce singing “Take My Hand, Precious Lord”.

Let’s be clear, it would have been nice for Ledisi to sing “Take My Hand, Precious Lord”. But she didn’t and she probably wouldn’t have at all. Beyonce by all accounts, asked to be involved and sing the song as an introduction for Common and John Legend. No one snubbed Ledisi and she wasn’t replaced; because it was never intended for the song to be sung, anyway. But why do we get up in arms every year by the lack of respect we are shown at the Grammy’s. Let’s be real; they’re pretty much ass every year. For year’s they didn’t show rap categories at all during the telecast; they returned to that last night, and many of the categories that are traditionally spearheaded by African Americans are NEVER shown, much less mentioned. Why would you expect this year to be any different, as we sat on the edge of our seats pleading the blood of Jesus that Iggy Azalea didn’t win, which was a relief; but we still had to settle for Eminem winning when we all know there were more deserving acts. Should we not be more upset that Beyonce lost Album of the Year to Beck instead of who sang a song, which really belongs to no one but Mahalia Jackson? We’re talking about an album that set the recording industry on its ear in the way of release, distribution, and construction. Not to mention that the album contained a video for every song and you HAD to buy the ENTIRE album when it was released, when you now have musicians catering to music listeners who song jump, and single purchase in droves. But we’re arguing about a performance that would have never been? Beyonce did a great job with the song. No, she isn’t a powerhouse traditional gospel singer, but as usual black people want to fight stereotypes and then enlist their own by pointing out things like she’s light skinned or joking she’s too skinny to sing that song. So are you telling us all gospel singers who can really SANG have to be dark skinned, flat footed, and fat?? Tisk, tisk, tisk . . . REALLY?!? One could argue that it should have been applauded that the song was performed at all and brought to the forefront. And the Grammy’s never have gospel performances, either! So, big ups to Jesus!

Why are we constantly seeking approval from a group that has shown time and time again that they don’t get it? LET IT GO! The Grammy’s are entertainment. We watch it to laugh and tweet about weird outfits, shitty performances, and the occasional political statement. If we want to see appreciation for our art; we have The NAACP Awards, The BET Awards, and a host of other avenues to reap those benefits. And real talk, for all the people going to bat for Ledisi did you buy her latest album, the Selma soundtrack, or go see Selma? Or did you get it from your local bootleg dealer? Yeah, that’s what we thought.
